3 key reasons why you must invest in yourself

To grow your career, you must plant the right seeds into your life

Don’t be misled: No one makes a fool of God. What a person plants, he will harvest. – Galatians 6:7 (The Message)

Actor and producer Will Smith has become once of the most bankable movie stars in Hollywood history. He is the only actor to have eight consecutive movies earning more than $100 million in box-office sales. What you might not know is, during his career as the rapper “Fresh Prince”, he was in almost three million dollars in debt.

Rather than continuing to spend money unwisely in an effort to look the part of a successful rapper, Will Smith made a choice to change his strategy. He began looking into film and TV as a potential area of interest, and he began studying the current trends in entertainment. He wanted to know what made a movie a hit, and he carefully applied the principles he learned when determining which roles to take.

In other words, he invested his time, energy and resources into himself, and it turned what could have been a common story of riches to rags into a powerful story of success.

As a creative professional, you must be able to see possibilities beyond what you are doing right now. The way to do that is to invest into your future, by utilizing the resources available to you. Here’s three key reasons why you should invest in yourself.

  1. You’ve discover what works for others.  You’re not the first artist who has struggled or worked to make an impact on the world, and by investing your time into learning, you will grow and learn from their wisdom and experience. If you can avoid the pitfalls that befell other artists and learn from their strengths, you’ll find that your own career reaps the benefits.
  2. You’ll discover what works for you. By investing into yourself, you hone and focus your attention. Many times in our careers we become distracted and disillusioned by the busyness of life, while we neglect what’s really important. Our creative drive is overwhelmed by our crazy schedules. Take the time and resources that you usually spend on other, less productive things and spend it on yourself, and you’ll find brand new ways to achieve your goals that you may have overlooked.
  3. You’ll discover what the future could be. The famous adage that “insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results'” holds true when it comes to artistry. If you do the same types of activities, don’t be surprised if your future looks suspiciously like your past. You must invest in yourself in order to change your perspective and your direction. Doing so will open your mind to possibilities you never considered, and make your future an exciting thing to look forward to.

Investing in yourself isn’t selfish. When you sow into your own development as a person and artist, you become a greater blessing to the world around you. Plant those seeds into your life today.

One day, you’ll look back and be glad you did.
