How does a drummer with a dream, who began playing drums in his family’s church at only seven years old, rise to become a highly successful musician working with some of the biggest stars in music?
According to Jamal J. Moore, drummer, producer, songwriter and clinician, it takes an unshakable belief in God, a ‘laser-eye focus’ on your goals, and an unquenchable desire to get better – even if it means taking criticism and using it as motivation to achieve true mastery of your gift.
From humble beginnings as a young man serving in the church pastored by his father, Jamal now has earned the respect and admiration of many of the most celebrated drummers of our time. His talent, drive and tireless work ethic has propelled him onto some of the world’s biggest stages, backing up world-renowned artists like T.I., the Backstreet Boys, Diddy, Usher, and many more.
By the time Moore turned 18, he had graduated from his hometown church to playing on the national gospel music stage with recording artist Byron Cage, performing his gospel hits like “The Presence of the Lord” and “I Will Bless the Lord”. Having made a name for himself as a top-notch drummer, Jamal then moved into the mega-star pop world when he joined the Backstreet Boys “Unbreakable” World Tour, guided by his mentor Aaron Spears.
That successful leap into high-profile music tours led him to work for other top artists including Natasha Bedingfield, Keri Hilson, Cee-lo Green, Diddy Dirty Money, Daughtry, and Kelly Rowland.
While he enjoys helping to create amazing live performances for other artists, he also has a desire to showcase his own writing and production – which he does with a creative flair on his most recent project “Voyager” – a unique burst of original material which presents 7 original songs in only 9 minutes of total runtime!
Keys to Leveling Up and Becoming Successful as a Creative and Musician
In this revealing and powerful discussion, Jamal explains:

- How he survived the loneliness of pursuing his musical dreams as a preacher’s kid when others didn’t understand his passion:
- How support from his family, his church and a community of mentoring musicians helped him to avoid the pitfalls and internal fears of being in the music industry;
- How he was challenged to apply greater discipline and attention to detail to his playing when he reached a new level in his career;
- Why he feels called to own his own platform and bypass the traditional channels music artists fall into;
- How he balances the competing interests of creating his own musical brand while simultaneously supporting other artists’ projects.
